Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really! want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. Thanks to the Department of Agriculture, you can see what it costs to raise a child in the U.S. to 18. As of August 2013, the average cost is $241,080. This does not cover college, and hopefully dear old dad is contributing. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. By becoming moms, women give up time to do other things, what economists call an "opportunity cost." Particularly if your mother st

Top 10 Performing Companies To Own For 2015

Ray Dalio is the founder of the world's largest and best-performing hedge fund in 2011, Bridgewater Associates. The letter was created October 31, 2008 and updated March, 2012:

The economy is like a machine. At the most fundamental level it is a relatively simple machine, yet it is not well understood. I wrote this paper to describe how I believe it works. My description is not the same as conventional economists' descriptions so you should decide for yourself whether or not what I'm saying makes sense. I will start with the simple things and build up, so please bear with me. I believe that you will be able to understand and assess my description if we patiently go through it.

How the Economic Machine Works: "A Transactions-Based Approach"

An economy is simply the sum of the transactions made and a transaction is a simple thing. A transaction consists of the buyer giving money (or credit) to a seller and the seller giving a good, a service or a financial asset to the buyer in exchange. A market consists of all the buyers and sellers making exchanges for the same things e.g., the wheat market consists of different people making different transactions for different reasons over time. An economy consists of all of the transactions in all of its markets. So, while seemingly complex, an economy is really just a zillion simple things working together, which makes it look more complex than it really is.

Icahn has been the talk of the activist circle of late, overshadowing some other notable activist campaigns. It appears that a combination of Ackman's own recent shortcomings and Icahn's high-profile Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) investment has overshadowed Ackman's activist bet on the less-than-sexy industrial space. Since Ackman announced his 9.8% ownership of Air Products (NYSE: APD) at the end of July, the stock is relatively flat.

Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.

In Magnum Hunter's two core operating areas, the Williston Basin and the Appalachian Basin, it has felt this impact directly. The company has been forced to endure production shut-ins because critical midstream assets, like those now in service by MarkWest (NYSE: MWE  ) , weren't yet available. Further, in order to access MarkWest's plants, Magnum Hunter has been building the pipeline infrastructure critical to connect its gas to these plants. As seen in the map below, Magnum Hunter's Eureka Hunter Pipeline is providing it with critical access to MarkWest's new Mobley plant:

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

MarkWest Energy (NYSE: MWE  ) has taken this as a challenge and will soon be the top infrastructure provider in the region. During the year it plans on bringing a 100,000 barrel per day fractionation facility on line with truck, rail, and pipeline access. This facility will also have access to fractionation facilities in the Marcellus Shale. This addition broadens a portfolio that already houses multiple facilities capable of refrigeration, cryogenic processing, and fractionation. As you can see from the following slide, the company has a number of projects under construction to meet the growing needs of producers in the region.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Zep (NYSE: ZEP  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Zep doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 3.5%, and inventory increased 11.8%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue grew 7.7%, and inventory grew 11.8%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue grew 3.4%, and inventory grew 4.7%.

Fink, Gross: Zero chance of debt default

Bloomberg

BlackRock Inc.'s Laurence D. Fink and Pacific Investment Management Co.'s Bill Gross said the U.S. budget standoff will be resolved without a debt default.

The congressional dispute will end “very rapidly,” Mr. Fink said at an event hosted by the UCLA Anderson School of Management at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., and streamed on CNBC.com.

“It's theatrics posed by politicians to get ratings or to get their way via legislation,” Mr. Gross said. “It's not a realistic proposition.”

A partial U.S. government shutdown entered a fourth day amid wrangling by lawmakers over the budget and debt limit. The U.S. will run out of borrowing authority Oct. 17 and will have $30 billion in cash after that. The country would be unable to pay all of its bills sometime between Oct. 22 and Oct. 31, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The shutdown has furloughed about 800,000 federal employees and is becoming a prolonged deadlock that is merging with the debt-ceiling debate.

Financial markets suggest that most investors anticipate U.S. lawmakers will raise the limit on the nation's debt and avoid a default on government securities, Pimco's Mohamed El- Erian said.‘Too Awful’

“The alternative would be too awful to contemplate,” Mr. El- Erian, chief executive officer at the world’s biggest manager of bond mutual funds, said on Bloomberg Television’s “In the Loop” with Betty Liu. “Most people in the market think we will avoid a debt-ceiling debacle.”

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said politicians should stop using the nation’s borrowing authority as a bargaining chip in policy debates, comparing the practice to the threat of dropping a nuclear bomb.

“It ought to be banned as a weapon,” Mr. Buffett, 83, said in an interview with Fortune magazine posted online today. “It should be like nuclear bombs, basically too horrible to use.”

House Speaker John Boehner said the way to end the government shutdown would be for Democrats to negotiate with him and accept changes that would produce “fairness” under the Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Boehner, speaking to reporters after a private meeting with House Republicans, criticized an unidentified White House official quoted in The Wall

The Dow Jumps the Gun

On this day in economic and business history ...

Exactly 36 years after it was created, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) made a number of great changes -- or changes that would have been great, if the Dow's overseers had stuck to their guns. On May 26, 1932, seven new stocks joined the Dow. Only one has remained part of the index ever since: Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) . Two others -- Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) and IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) -- were removed far too soon.

Procter & Gamble had an eventful 1932 after joining the Dow. Its soap-making plants shifted to a five-day workweek, founding scion James Norris Gamble passed away at the ripe old age of 95, and it won an award for workplace safety in New York. However, the lowest ebb of the early Great Depression eviscerated P&G's profits, which shrank to a mere $9.1 million in fiscal 1932 from $22.7 million the year before. The company ably recovered from these doldrums, and over the following eight decades its bottom line swelled to $10.76 billion, representing an annualized net income growth rate of 9.3%. The Dow, by comparison, grew at 7.2% per year from the day of P&G's initiation to its 80-year anniversary.

Coke was coming off the first year of its wildly successful Santa Claus ad campaign in 1932, and despite the recession, shareholders had enjoyed gains of roughly 1,000% since the company's IPO in 1919. Coke was gone from the Dow by 1935 and wouldn't rejoin until 1987. This meant that the Dow missed out on a truly remarkable run of returns -- had Coke remained with the index for the same uninterrupted 80-year period as P&G, it would have contributed a seven-digit (2,100,000%) total return to the Dow's growth.

But Coke's stock, which has often split on reaching a triple-digit share price, might have had, at best, a similarly outsized impact as a consistently triple-digit IBM stock on the price-weighted Dow. IBM was removed from the Dow in 1939 and wasn't readded until 1979, which meant that the index missed out on the company's incredible (and incredibly profitable) technological progress from analog tabulators to digital mainframes. Even in 1939, IBM's future seemed bright enough to justify continued placement, as it was then responsible for providing calculating machines for the recently formed Social Security Administration.

Between the 1950s and 1979, IBM introduced early forms of many computer hardware and software elements we now take for granted. Had IBM never left the Dow, its persistently high stock price and 22,000% return during its absence would have built a Dow worth roughly twice its 1979 value of 840 points. The same can't be said of IBM's performance after 1979 -- its 900% total return over the two decades that followed actually underperformed the index by roughly 200%.

In some ways, the Dow truly is relevant to the average American investor. Both understand that the key to long-term growth is to find great businesses dominating their industries, but both parties have a tendency (in many cases) to pull the trigger too soon on a sale, or to jump on board a hot stock too close to a peak. And for many smaller-sized portfolios, 30 stocks is a perfectly reasonable number -- enough to be diversified, but not so many as to lose track of everything.

A bloodsucker in more ways than one
Bram Stoker's Dracula was published for the first time on May 26, 1897. Arriving exactly a year after the first publication of Charles Dow's industrial index, the tale of a charming vampire from Transylvania had a similar effect on pop culture as Dow's index had on stock market culture. While it wasn't an immediate best-seller, the novel's influence on early filmmaking led to an explosion of interest in vampire stories that continues to this day, to the chagrin of many husbands and boyfriends. Stoker's creation, and the worldwide pop-culture craze it spawned, has added an estimated $10 billion to the economy, according to one "very conservative" estimate by 24/7 Wall Street's Jon C. Ogg.

5 Best Consumer Stocks To Invest In 2015

A quick look at a 10-year oil price chart reveals a clear trend: Oil prices are going up. Moreover, oil price increases are not a mere artifact of normal inflation. While the U.S. consumer price index has increased just 26.4% over the past 10 years, oil prices have gained a whopping 257%!

Oil Prices vs. Inflation, data by YCharts

The pace of price increases has been anything but steady, but if you exclude oil's rapid spike from mid-2007 to mid-2008 and the subsequent crash period from mid-2008 to mid-2009, you can see a clear uptrend.

US Crude Oil Price Chart, data by YCharts

Given this clear uptrend in oil prices, the conventional wisdom today is that oil prices are headed higher, both in real terms and in nominal terms. In fact, when my colleague Travis Hoium recently wrote that U.S. gas prices would never hit $5, dozens of people spoke out to disagree. Many said that they expect gas prices to rise well beyond $5 by the end of the decade.

Top Consumer Stocks To Buy Right Now

On Friday, investors responded positively to favorable economic news, with favorable readings on personal income and spending pointing to the resiliency of the American consumer, even in the face of tough winter conditions that many businesses have blamed for temporary shortfalls in revenue and earnings. Even though the broader market gave up most of its gains from earlier in the day, GameStop (NYSE: GME  ) , TriNet Group (NYSE: TNET  ) , and Restoration Hardware (NYSE: RH  ) all managed to hold onto large advances in their respective share prices going into the weekend.

GameStop jumped 9% Friday, more than making back its losses from yesterday following a quarterly report that initially disappointed investors. The video game retailer saw same-store sales rise 7.8%, but adjusted earnings fell 12%. Despite favorable guidance for 2014, investors worried about the prospect of tougher competition from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) and other retailers, as well as steps from video game makers to eliminate the need for GameStop's middleman services. Analysts at Sterne Agee accentuated the positives in GameStop's report today, with expectations that earnings growth and GameStop's investor day next month could send the stock higher this year if the video game industry generally prospers from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Moreover, initiatives to broaden GameStop's scope to sell other electronics could be a good way to use its store base, even if other companies have struggled selling those electronics on their own.

Nokia (NOK) is starting to rival Samsung (SSNLF.PK) in rapidly releasing new smartphones for the global market. The company announced and released a 4.7 inches Nokia 625 in a month's time and is all set to introduce a larger phablet next month. The company's low end 520 has been a big success and the initial indications about the Lumia 1020 are also very encouraging. Nokia has launched almost 15 Lumias in the past one and half years and has managed to grow shipments sharply. The company has almost totally captured the Windows 8 mobile OS accounting for 85% of all the WP 8 smartphones shipped. Nokia still faces some issues regarding profitability and competition, but the company's Lumia performance has been excellent in the past couple of quarters. Nokia is now all set to fill a big gap in its portfolio by launching a Windows tablet running on a Qualcomm (QCOM) processor. While most analysts have dismissed this as futile even before the launch, I think that this is a good move on Nokia's part. The company remains cheap given its valuable technology assets and improved strategy execution.

  • [By Sneha Shah]

Nokia's Lumia 520 is the cheapest WP 8 smartphone in the market with a price of around ~$160. This phone has been one of the most popular smartphones in this category, given the number of features at this price range. The phone has a good 4.3 inch screen size with free Windows office and HERE maps. The design and looks are extremely good compared to the cheap plastic found on Android phones. The Lumia 620 is the second cheapest Lumia with a price of ~$220. Now Nokia has made buying these phones even more attractive by allowing exchange schemes for these smartphones. Note most of the other major smartphone sellers such as Apple, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and Blackberry have already come out with smartphone exchange schemes. These are nothing but disguised discounting schemes to promote sales. Nokia too has joined the bandwagon and now you can buy a Nokia 520 for only ~$120. This makes the WP 8 phone highly competitive with the cheapest Android which sells at ~$80-100. The value proposition of the 520 is much higher than these Androids in my view and 520 sales should surge.

Since barely a week before the show, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) announced that it was "in production" on a new 3D NAND process. Since 3D NAND is considered the holy grail of NAND technology of the future, you would think that Samsung would be a shoe-in for the product of the year at the 2013 Flash Summit. And If you though that, you would have been wrong. The actual winner of the Best of Show award was Micron's (MU) new 16nm planar NAND memory made with the HKMG (High K Metal Gate) process. In order for Micron to have won this award, the new 16nm must be a more elegant process than we thought.

Top Consumer Stocks To Buy Right Now: Vapor Corp (VPCO)

Vapor Corp (Vapor), incorporated in 1987, is engaged in designing, marketing and distributing electronic cigarettes and accessories under the Fifty-One, Krave, VaporX, EZ Smoker, Green Puffer, Americig, Fumre Hookah Stix and Smoke Star brands. Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered products that enable users to inhale nicotine vapor without smoke, tar, ash, or carbon monoxide. Electronic cigarettes look like traditional cigarettes and consists of three functional components: a mouthpiece, which is a small plastic cartridge that contains a liquid nicotine solution; a heating element that vaporizes the liquid nicotine so that it can be inhaled; and the electronics, which include: a lithium-ion battery, an airflow sensor, a microchip controller and an light emitting diode (LED), which illuminates to indicate use. When a user draws air through the electronic cigarette, the air flow is detected by a sensor, which activates a heating element that vaporizes the solution stored in the mouthpiece/cartridge, the solution is then vaporized and it is this vapor that is inhaled by the user. The cartridge contains either a nicotine solution or a nicotine free solution, either of which may be flavored. The Company offers rechargeable and disposable electronic cigarettes in two varieties: a two-piece unit, which the Company markets under its DUO product line; and a three-piece unit, which the Company markets under its TRIO product line.

The DUO

The DUO's 2-part construction (battery component and cartridge) features a disposable all-in-one atomized cartridge (also known as a cartomizer). This cartomizer is replaced when the nicotine or nicotine free solution is depleted from use.
