Top 5 Solar Companies To Watch In Right Now

Twelve stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 have fallen since the March 9, 2009, low, a painful reminder that not even a epic bull market can overpower company and industry woes.

Alternative-energy company First Solar, gold miner Newmont Mining, office goods retailer Staples and cosmetics seller Avon are among the so called "dirty dozen," the stocks that missed out on what's been a remarkable nearly 200% market rally from the lows five years ago. Anyone who owned these stocks not only whiffed on the rally, but has enviously watched other investors' portfolios soar to new highs.

"If your stocks didn't triple, you didn't do as well as the market," says Howard Silverblatt of S&P Dow Jones Indices. "Not all stocks have come back."

An examination of the dirty dozen stocks shows that they fall into a number of categories, including:

EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq:EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the fiber optic and solar power markets, reported that it is ramping production and shipping the Opticomm-EMCORE NEXTGEN OTP-1DVI2A1SU insert cards for the Optiva platform.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

EMCORE (EMKR), together with its subsidiaries, provides compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite, and solar power markets. This stock closed up 1% to $4.09 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $4.00-$4.14
    52-Week Range: $3.50-$5.62
    Tuesday's Volume: 187,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 103,744

From a technical perspective, EMKR trended modestly higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $4.03 with above-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last three months each time it has pulled back, which is a bullish technical sign. This spike to the upside on Tuesday is starting to push shares of EMKR within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if EMRK manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.16 to $4.20 and then above $4.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMKR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.90 to $3.86 or above more support at $3.78 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 103,744 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then EMKR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.53 to its 200-day moving average of $4.65, or even $5 to $5.30.

Advisors' Opinion:

Next Tuesday, LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) will release its latest quarterly results. Lately, investors have had to wonder whether the Chinese solar company will be able to continue operating, as LDK is one of many solar companies in the emerging-market nation going through a cash crunch due to large losses.

In the Chinese solar sector we tracked the following short interest changes: JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO), LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. Advisors' Opinion:

Don't look now but SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) has become the best-performing stock in the solar industry. Over the past year, it's been better than fellow U.S.-based companies First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and far better than most Chinese manufacturers. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Trina Solar lag well behind even after recent pops higher; only Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) can come close to SunPower's return (and I'll get into the reason for that below).

Solar stocks have not exactly given buy and hold investors a smooth ride, but small capGT Advanced Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: GTAT) could be an interesting materials play on the solar sectormeaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with potential peers like Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc (NASDAQ: ASTI) and STR Holdings, Inc (NYSE: STRI) plus solar ETF Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSEARCA: TAN). I should mention that just last week, we added GT Advanced Technologies to ourSmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio for bothfundamentals and technical reasons and we are already up almost 9%.

3 Key Takeaways From Zillow's Earnings Call

Zillow (NASDAQ: Z  ) is facing increasing pressure for the leadership position in the online real estate marketplace. The recent purchase of Market Leader by Trulia (NYSE: TRLA  ) places it in a more comparable position based on revenue. Move (NASDAQ: MOVE  ) continues to make long-needed enhancements to realtor.com, but it has fallen far behind the monthly unique users, or MUUs, of Zillow and Trulia.

The previous week's earnings call for Zillow provided several key numbers that suggest the leadership position isn't as much in question. While Trulia made a big step forward on the professional agent aspect of the business, it fell even further behind on traffic to its core sites. In addition, Move recently got approval to become more competitive via quicker updates to the primary website, but the consumer traffic levels suggest it might be too far behind to catch up. After all, President Obama chose Zillow to participate in a discussion on the real estate market, but not the other two companies.

Market share expansion
Not only is Zillow seen as the leading real estate marketplace brand, it continues to grow market leadership. According to comScore, the desktop market share grew during the third quarter to 34% from 27% last year. In mobile, Experian's Hitwise listed Zillow as having nearly double the market share of the second-place brand.

This market share leadership was evidenced by Zillow averaging 61 million MUUs during the third quarter, with a record 64 million unique users in August alone. Trulia reported 35 million users for the Trulia business line and 42 million total, counting the added Market Leader users. Move saw 22% growth, but total MUUs only reached 28 million.

New York opportunity
Zillow recently purchased StreetEasy to capture the distinctive New York real estate market. While the site draws 1 million MUUs, the interesting stat is that the New York market generates $1.9 billion in annual agent commissions. This amount is so large that it reaches 60% of the Australia market and 33% of the U.K. Being able to achieve a commanding market share in the largest real estate marketplace could provide a commanding lead in becoming the dominant player. Perhaps even more interesting is that New York house rental transaction volume exceeds for-sale transactions.

Best Clean Energy Stocks To Invest In 2015

Expanding agent ad spend
The number that's sure to cause significant debate is the projected expansion of agent advertising spending. Zillow proposes that, due to a higher return on investment from advertising dollars spent on its website compared to traditional media forms, agents will be more likely to spend a larger percentage of commissions. The ultimate question is whether that ROI can be maintained as more agents move onto the site and the leads become more competitive and, hence, expensive to obtain.

Agents currently spend an estimated 10% to 20% of their $60 billion in commissions on ads, with the majority choosing print and traditional media forms. Zillow projects total advertising levels will jump to $20 billion or more with agents willing to spend up to 40% of commissions on real home buyer clients. The company claims that these numbers are consistent with international comps.

Worth noting is that Zillow, Trulia, and Move combined are only expected to generate roughly $600 million in revenue this year. Those numbers are bolstered by non-agent advertising revenue such as display ads and mortgages.

Bottom line
Zillow took the best shot last quarter from the top competition in the online real estate marketplace, separating itself in the process. That's a clear sign of a market leader and future dominant player. Valuations of Trulia and Move are compelling compared to their growth rates, but the second and third players in a market tend to have lower valuations.

With Zillow trading at roughly 10 times forward revenue estimates, most investors will have issues with the valuation. Ultimately though, the market leader in the online real estate market will likely attract valuations similar to other segments (like cloud software and social media) that would place the stock beyond a market cap of $3 billion. With revenue growing above 50% and Zillow likely to take market share as it becomes the dominant player, it will quickly grow into an even larger valuation.

Hot Industrial Disributor Companies To Invest In Right Now

With the closing bell having mercifully put this week of trading out of its misery, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is down 3.31% for the week. As bad as that sounds, it's better than Citigroup's 5.8% loss. Blame it all on the Federal Reserve's big news; but when all is said and done, the central bank may have done investors a huge favor.

In case you missed it
Of course, the big news was Ben Bernanke's Wednesday announcement that the Fed will begin tapering quantitative easing by the end of this year. QE is the central bank's program of $85 billion in bond purchases each month.

Bernanke gave mid-2014 as the target date for the end of the bond purchases, when unemployment is projected to hit 7%. Interest rates will be kept low until unemployment hits 6.5%.

Foolish bottom line
The Fed chairman went out of his way to stress that tapering will occur only if the economic data continues trending positive. Bernanke has clearly not left investors hanging. He's been talking about tapering for months, likely preparing markets for what he knew had to happen: the slow but sure winding down of QE. The Fed couldn't keep expanding its balance sheet at the rate it was going forever.

I get somewhat amused every day by the thousands of traders who spend all day trying to figure out what the hot stocks like Twitter (TWTR) and Facebook (FB) are going to do every day. Owning stocks like these two banks — or ones I have mentioned before, like ESSA Bancorp (ESSA) and Charter Financial (CHFN) — will be a far more profitable and relaxing endeavor over the next few years.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

Right now I know that silver miners like Pan American Silver (PAAS) and Coeur Mining (CDE) are very cheap on an asset basis. I know that oil and gas producers like Swift Energy (SFY) and WPX Energy (WPX) are priced as if no one will ever use the stuff again. I know that small banks like Cape Bancorp (CBNJ) and Essa Bancorp (ESSA) are crazy-cheap — and if the world does not end, those stocks will be a lot higher in a few years.

Advisors' Opinion:

This is a business model that working, yet its stock price is barely up more than 5% from its July 31, 2013, IPO. As more capital flows into the business AMH will continue buying up more homes. Eventually, investors will realize that AMH isn going away and that Americans don have to feel bad about renting rather owning. Wayne Hughes has struck again.

Pure-Play REITs: Gaming and Leisure Properties (GLPI)

Famed investor Leon Cooperman sold his position in Penn National Gaming (PENN) in the fourth quarter of 2013, replacing it with a 2.2 million shares of GLPI, the real estate spinoff the casino operator took public through a 1-for-1 share distribution last November. Its first acquisition came one month later when it paid $140 million for a casino in East St. Louis. Pure-play REITs come in all shapes and sizes, but never before has there been one in the casino business.

So, if you think Dun & Bradstreet (DNB) has a very reliable business, than DNB at 12 times earnings or 9 times enterprise value divided by EBITDA or whatever is a lot more attractive than some other businesses trading at the same multiples. It's like the difference between a safe bond yielding 6% and a very risky bond yielding 6%. They both offer the same return in theory. Yeah, they pay the same amount this year. But, they do not both offer the same reliability.

Advisors' Opinion:

Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ: MNST), a mid cap marketer and distributor of energy drinks and alternative beverages, has been a monster of a performer since the end of the financial crisis as the stock is up around 308% over the past five years, but could new or overlooked players like small cap beverage stocksJones Soda Co (OTCMKTS: JSDA), Celsius Holdings, Inc (OTCMKTS: CELH) and Konared Corp (OTCBB: KRED) repeat that performance? A look strictly at the long term performance of all three small caps might have you thinking otherwise. After all, none of these small cap beverage stocks are profitable whilethe beverage industry can be a long hard expensive slog just to increase market share by one or two points when you are competing for shelf space with industry giants like Pepsi and Coke. But past performance is just thatthe past and only part of the story as there is much more to consider about these small cap beverage stocks which could also make them potential acquisition targets by larger beverage players seeking to expand their product line up with innovative products:

Liberty Global: Media Breakout?

Best Defense Companies To Invest In Right Now

Though based in California, our latest featured stock is one of the largest cable TV operators, in terms of subscribers, outside the US, observes Leo Fasciocco, editor of Ticker Tape Digest.

The company, Liberty Global PLC (LBTYA), owns interests in broadband distribution and content companies in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, although the company is based in California.

With earnings set to soar this year, is poised for an upside breakout and we suggest accumulation in anticipation of a move to a new high.

From a peak of $45 in 2008, the bear market pulled it down to $9. The stock turned up in mid-2009, and has been a star performer, having made almost a nine-fold move. A push to a new high on a breakout could bring in more buying.

This year, analysts are forecasting a 65% surge in net to $1.30 a share from 79 cents a year ago. The stock sells with a price-earnings ratio of 62. We see that as high, but okay, given the earnings growth rate.

Looking out to 2014, profits are projected to soar 127% to $2.96 a share from the anticipated $1.30 this year. That is an acceleration in annual earnings growth, which is bullish.

The acceleration in earnings growth will also show up on a quarterly basis. Net for the third quarter should climb 30%, and then, in the fourth quarter, soar 266%.

Institutional sponsorship is very good. One of the largest fund holders is Fidelity Contrafund; the 4-star rated fund was a recent buyer of 278,600 shares.

Another key buyer recently was 5-star rated Artisan International Fund which purchased 584,074 shares.

Overall, we rate LBTYA a good intermediate-term play, provided earnings meet expectations.

We suggest accumulation of a partial stake in LBTYA, with further buying to be done on a breakout over $82.30. We are then targeting LBTYA for a move to $105, after a breakout. A protective stop can be placed near $75.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

The market seems to be showing fatigue particularly with positive onshore oil service data points that may nolonger seem incremental. Investors have become especially focused on potential issues and macro concerns. We believe this phaseof enhanced risk perceptions will pass and still recommend owning selective stocks based on attractive valuations and healthyfundamentals. Of the 16 oilfield services companies having reported their quarters to date, the share price changes have at timesbeen difficult to tie to specific results. … Five of the 12 companies who have beaten earnings expectations have seen their share prices drop on the day, including Basic Energy Services (BAS) (-9.0%), Baker Hughes (BHI) (-2.5%), National Oilwell Varco (NOV) (-1.5%), Oceaneering (OII) (-4.2%), and Schlumberger (SLB) (-2.0%). Other stocks beating expectations have traded higher as expected, including Cameron International (CAM) (+4.1%), FMC Technologies (FTI) (+3.1%), Mitcham In dustries (MIND) (+3.8%), Nabors Industries (NBR) (+1.2%), Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN) (+1.8%), RPC (RES) (+8.4%), and Weatherford International (WFT) (+2.3%). Companies which have missed have universally seen their share prices decline, including Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) (-4.3%), Gulfmark Offshore (GLF) (-0.1%), and Hercules Offshore (HERO) (-6.9%). Halliburton (HAL) was in line and flat on the day.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Radovsky]

Pinnacle Entertainment (NYSE: PNK  ) has reached an agreement in principle with the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission that would allow the company to complete its proposed acquisition of Ameristar Casinos (NASDAQ: ASCA  ) , Pinnacle announced today.

  • [By Grace L. Williams]

First up is Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK). CEO Anthony Michaal Sanfilippo bought 23,000 shares of the Las Vegas-based gaming company for $505,800. InsiderScore notes this is his first purchase in nearly two years and writes, After shares retreated more than 15% from a six-year high and with an activist hedge fund pushing the casino operator to spin off its real estate into a REIT, Sanfilippo stepped up with his first purchase. [He put] a fresh $500,000 into the stock at a price two times his cost basis of previous buys.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK) has gained 56% this year; Las Vegas Sands (LVS) has climbed 38%. And Deutsche Bank has nice things to say about both today.

    Bloomber! g

First Pinnacle. Deutsche Bank’s Carlo Santarelli ponders the stock’s big move and comes away still seeing value in its shares. He writes:

When we upgraded PNK in April, our thesis centered on the FCF strength of the combined entities [Pinnacle completed its acquisition of Ameristar Casinos on Aug. 14], a handful of favorable catalysts, easing regional gaming comps, & an inexpensive relative valuation. Given the shares’ sizeable move since then, we believe it is worth revisiting the investment case. Post the announcement of several asset sales and the closing of the transaction, we are adjusting our estimates, raising our PT to $30 from $24, and maintaining our bullish view at current levels given what we still believe to be an attractive free cash flow valuation, meaningful potential synergy realization beyond the $40 mm of announced benefits, and a free option on a lagging regional recovery.

Santarelli also revisited Las Vegas Sands and there too, he likes what he sees. He writes:

With…LVS at [a share price level] that have been challenging to break from over the last year plus, we believe this time is different and hence we see continued upward momentum…In the case of LVS, we see; 1) meaningful mass market strength continuing through year end, setting the stage for upward company and market estimate revisions for 2014, 2) continued cash flow appreciation and capital returns serving as downside protection and positive catalysts, and 3) continued shared gains, largely driven by table optimization and mass market strength, driving both estimates and sentiment.

He also likes Wynn Resorts (WYNN), despite its 34% gain.Santarelli writes:

As for WYNN, we believe near-term estimates continue to take a back seat to capital return

The Secret Agenda That's Hurting Your Investing Returns

AutoNation ceo mike jackson investing adviceJin Lee/APAutoNation CEO Mike Jackson If you follow the financial media regularly, you will find daily predictions about the direction of the markets. Breakout, a daily blog on Yahoo Finance's website, is typical of what passes for financial information. On Sept. 6, Breakout's Jeff Macke featured Mike Jackson, the CEO of AutoNation (AN), as his guest. Jackson opined that the economy "has moved into a self-sustaining recovery." He may or may not be correct in that assessment, but relying on his views or the views of others claiming predictive powers is more akin to gambling than investing. Macke's program is no worse than what is dispensed by many of his colleagues in the media. The format is familiar to all of us: Intelligent people in positions of power and influence make rational-sounding statements about the economy, the direction of the market or the merit of a particular stock or fund. What's missing is any data indicating that their views are worthy of consideration, based on a history of accurate past predictions or demonstration of predictive skill (as contrasted with luck). There is ample evidence to the contrary. In a paper published in July 2010, three finance professors from Duke University and Ohio State University published the results of an extensive survey they performed. Each quarter from March 2001 to February 2010, they surveyed "top U.S. financial executives." They asked them to predict one- and 10-year stock market returns and also for their predictions of best- and worst-case outcomes. The data they gathered aggregated 11,600 S&P 500 forecasts. You would think the accumulated expertise of these executives would permit them to make fairly accurate predictions about a commonly used index such as the S&P 500 (^GSPC). The opposite was true. The authors of the study found no correlation between the estimates of these top financial executives and the actual value of the index. In fact, the correlation was negative. When they predicted the index would decline, it was modestly more likely it would go up. Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman commented on this study in his book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow", noting, "These findings are not surprising. The truly bad news is that the CFOs did not appear to know that their forecasts were worthless." Since the data is overwhelming that predictions are basically "worthless," why do investors continue to pay attention to them, often to their financial detriment? Kahneman provides this answer: "Facts that challenge such basic assumptions -- and thereby threaten people's livelihood and self-esteem -- are simply not absorbed. The mind does not digest them." If investors accepted the fact that the predictive views of financial "experts" were "worthless," the ramifications would be profound. Much of the financial media would cease to exist. Brokers would go out of business because clients would view their advice through the prism provided by sound academic studies and the views of scholars such as Kahneman. This result -- threatening the livelihood and self-esteem of powerful segments of our society -- is simply not going to happen. While much of the financial media and many brokers are driven by this secret agenda to maintain their livelihoods, you should ignore their musings and base your investing decisions on reliable, peer-reviewed data. Dan Solin is the director of investor advocacy for the BAM Alliance and a wealth adviser with Buckingham Asset Management. He is a New York Times best-selling author of the Smartest series of books. His next book, The Smartest Sales Book You'll Ever Read, will be published March 3, 2014.

Top 10 Healthcare Technology Stocks To Invest In 2014

With each passing month, it's becoming evident that the current bull market has slowed from a gallop to a trot.

The S&P 500, which rose 29% in 2013, will likely trail such a gain this year, as it is up only 7% in 2014 as of September 15. And by one key measure, the bulls advance may cease altogether, potentially resulting in a market reversal.

Make no mistake, the market has been in rally mode for more than five years in large part due to the Fed's easing hand, which is fueling ultra-low interest rates and ample liquidity for stock buying. Yet it's always wise to keep an eye on traditional market metrics, in case the market starts to become fully disconnected from the fundamentals.

I think of it as expensive, but a quick check on my data provider shows the two shares equally rated with prospective price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios of 19.7 and yields of 2.3% for Diageo and 2.2% for SABMiller. So maybe it's time to do a little portfolio rebalancing.

At current valuations, STZ stock is not attractive relative to its larger and better diversified megabrewer rivals — all of which have better exposure to emerging markets. As long-term holdings, I see better value in Heinken, Anheuser-Busch InBev and SAB Miller (SBMRY).

  • [By Roland Head]

Luckily, there is another way. The FTSE 100 contains a number of companies whose earnings come from these countries. Two great examples are Diageo (LSE: DGE  ) (NYSE: DEO  ) and SABMiller (LSE: SAB  ) (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY  ) , which sell spirits and beer, respectively, and have global operations providing exactly the kind of emerging-market exposure I'm looking for.

Ford Races to Catch GM in Sales

With half of 2013 in the record books the automotive industry has just put away its best month of the year and sales look to continue upward. Ford (NYSE: F  ) , General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) , and Chrysler have rebounded from their darkest chapter in history, and for the first time in two decades all three gained market share for the first half of 2013.

Although people may disagree about the route GM and Chrysler took by wiping out billions of dollars in debt through a government bailout – and I certainly have my issues with it – it is hard to disagree that all three are producing competitive vehicles in segments they were once left for dead in. Ford is doing especially well; it's narrowing the sales lead GM has held for years, and here's how the numbers look.

By the numbers
GM's sales through June came in at 1,420,346 units, which is good for an 8% increase over the same time period last year. Ford recorded the best increase of the five top automakers with a 13.1% jump to 1,289,736 units sold. Chrysler's sales increased by 8.9% to just top 900,000 units sold. Toyota and Honda were up 6% and 6.4% for total sales of 1,108,791 and 745,578, respectively.

With Ford's increase being much higher than its largest competitors, we can expect its market share to take the biggest jump as well:

Information from the Wall Street Journal.

The change may not seem like a big jump, but it is. Each fraction of a percentage point is a big deal, and Ford's gain in U.S. market share was the best of any automaker. The question is: Will Ford gain enough market share to replace GM as the best-selling automaker in the U.S.?

I believe that Ford will, and it will largely be decided over the next two years. June's seasonally adjusted annual rate, or SAAR, came in just under 16 million – the highest rate in over five years. The rising tide will raise all boats, but Ford will capitalize more than its rival because GM still owns the oldest vehicle portfolio in the industry.

While Ford was designing and launching hugely popular vehicles, such as the Fusion and the Escape, GM was still wrangling with its financial fallout and government bailout. While GM's best-selling Silverado aged far beyond its expected lifespan, Ford's F-150 continues to increase its sales lead and the company is anticipating its 2015 redesigned F-150 to be a big hit.

As most of you know, Ford's F-150 has been the best-selling truck for 31 years and the overall best-selling vehicle for 36 – and that will continue for the foreseeable future. In addition to the F-150's success, these three vehicles should help Ford race past GM in the next couple years:

Information from Automotive News DataCenter.

Bottom line
Ford is years ahead of GM in certain aspects, including operating efficiency and bottom-line profits. All of Ford's new vehicles have been a hit where GM has stumbled with its redesigned Malibu. GM just started its all-important advertising blitz for its redesigned 2014 Silverado and that will be a big factor if GM wants to hold on to its sales crown. GM surely isn't going to give up the sales lead without a fight and plans to redesign, refresh, or replace almost 90% of its vehicles by 2016 – but I still expect Ford to come out ahead.

5 Best Construction Material Stocks For 2014

On Jul 12, we maintained our Underperform recommendation on Itron, Inc. (ITRI) based on decline in bookings and backlog, a challenging U.S. market, muted spending in European countries and recent weakness in the Latin American residential business.

Why Reiterated?

Itron first-quarter 2013 adjusted earnings fell 66% year over year to 31 cents per share, while revenues dipped 22% to $448 million. The decline in revenues was mainly due to the Energy segment after the completion of several OpenWay projects in North America.

The company witnessed surprisingly weak demand trends in January/February. Though it somewhat improved in March/April, there were some regional issues. Given the weak start to the year, Itron will need contribution from new large contract wins to achieve its full-year growth target. Furthermore, the completion of the OpenWay projects is expected to impact revenues negatively in the next few quarters.

Itron bookings in the quarter declined to $447 million from $467 million in the preceding quarter and backlog at the end of the quarter was $1.029 billion versus $1.035 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2012.
