Equity markets stumbled a bit to start the year but have since enjoyed a solid mid-winter rally, with the S&P 500 Index pushing out to new all-time highs.
The Dow Jones Utilities Average and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Utility Index have both enjoyed consistently strong runs this year. Earnings for electric utilities, as we detail in the March issue of Utility Forecaster, available at www.UtilityForecaster.com, have been solid at both the top and bottom lines.
Well-known economist David Rosenberg, formerly chief economist for Merrill Lynch and now with Toronto-based Gluskin Sheff + Associates, has argued in recent days that Canadian stocks are trading at an picdiscount to US stocks.
The S&P/Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index, meanwhile, has surged to five-and-a-half-year highs, and the aussie has found some traction as well.
As I do once every month (except December), on Feb. 27 I met up in a virtual forum with Australian Edge, Canadian Edge and UF subscribers to discuss these and other, more company-specific issues.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Reuben Brewer]
Relatively weak demand for thermal coal in China has pushed coal prices lower in Australia. That's a problem for big miners like Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO ) , BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP ) , and Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU ) . However it could add to the allure of uranium miner Cameco (NYSE: CCJ ) .
- [By Selena Maranjian]
Among holdings in which GMT Capital increased its stake was Canada-based uranium specialist Cameco (NYSE: CCJ ) . The company's business is expected to improve as gas and coal prices eventually rise, and also due to new nuclear plants being built. My colleague Sean Williams likes Cameco's transparency, expects higher uranium prices, and notes that China is also expected to demand more uranium over time. Some see the stock having a fair chance to appreciate substantially.

ARCP has a shorter trading history than some of its peers, such as Realty Income (O) and National Retail Properties (NNN), which largely explains why its yield is higher. As a relatively new REIT, ARCP stock is largely unfollowed by investors. But once its merger with Cole Properties (COLE) is completed, ARCP will be the largest trip-net REIT by market cap and total square footage, and it will no longer be flying under Wall Street radar.

Carey (WPC) 57.84%; Spirit Realty (SRC) 35.44%; and American Realty Capital Properties 52.18%.

- [By Marc Courtenay]
Some other names to consider as takeover targets would include FMC Technologies, Inc. (FTI), which provides technology solutions for the energy industry worldwide and hit a 52-week high on April 11th. Another less conspicuous target is the diversified chemical company FMC Corp. (FMC), which has a market cap of only $8 billion plus a forward PE of less than 13.

Timing of the transaction completion is mid 2015, following final approval of the BoD, receipt of favorable opinion on tax free status from IRS, shareholder approval, & all regulatory approvals. As a point of interest we have seen several announcements recently where an announcement of the split drives the stocks up 10% and quickly fades as timing sets in and market risk still exists. recent examples [Hertz (HTZ), FMC Corp (FMC), Agilent (A), Noble (NE), CBS (CBS)]. I would expect the stock to fade hard from these levels
